Bushenyi Water Supply Augmentation Project – A Story of Strengthening Access

In Bushenyi District, growing demand and pressure on existing water systems called for a strategic intervention. The project was designed to expand and stabilize water supply across key areas including Kakanju, Bitooma, Kyamuhunga, Kyamugunga, and Ruhumuro—ensuring more reliable access for communities and local economies.

At the heart of the project was the development of critical infrastructure: a raw water intake at River Walugo, a 2,500m³/day treatment plant at Kibatama, a 3.9km pumping main, and a 600m³ steel storage tank in Nyakabingo. Together, these components formed a system capable of meeting both current and future demand.

Our role focused on ensuring that this development was not only technically sound but also socially responsible and environmentally compliant. We conducted comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA), analyzing physical, biological, and socio-economic conditions to guide sustainable implementation.

At the community level, we led the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP), engaging directly with affected households, conducting property valuations, and designing fair compensation and livelihood restoration measures. Through stakeholder consultations and sensitization efforts, we ensured that local voices shaped project decisions and outcomes.

We also developed detailed Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs), outlining mitigation strategies, monitoring frameworks, and compliance mechanisms to guide construction and operations.

The result was a well-balanced project—one that not only delivers improved water access but also safeguards communities, respects livelihoods, and protects the environment.
